To the Tasmanian Government · Firearms Amendment Bill 2026

To the Hon. Jeremy Rockliff MP, Premier of Tasmania, and the Hon. Felix Ellis MP, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management:

We, the undersigned residents of Tasmania, call on the Government to withdraw the Firearms Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill 2026.

Tasmanians support strong action against illegal firearms, firearm theft, organised crime and dangerous offenders. This Bill does not target those responsible. It targets licensed, police-checked firearm owners who have obeyed the law.

The Bill would reclassify commonly owned rifles and shotguns, confiscate lawfully acquired property through a taxpayer-funded buyback, expand surveillance of licensed owners and leave the door open to further restrictions on lawful ownership.

Tasmania cannot afford this. The State faces a $596.7 million deficit. Net debt is heading towards $10 billion. Regional communities are still waiting for better roads, health services, police, emergency services and basic infrastructure.

We therefore call on the Government to:

  1. withdraw the Bill;
  2. abandon the reclassification and confiscation of lawfully owned firearms;
  3. rule out any cap on lawful firearm ownership; and
  4. direct police and public resources towards illegal firearms, criminal networks, repeat offenders and firearm theft.

Do not punish the law-abiding for the actions of criminals. Do not spend money Tasmania does not have on a scheme that will not make the State safer. Withdraw the Bill and tackle the real problem.
